Left turn accidents claim motorcyclists lives

When identifying those things that car or truck drivers do that place a motorcyclist in danger, the left-hand turn is often cited by motorcycle operators as their biggest fear. Due to limited reaction time, left turn accidents where a driver turns into the path of an oncoming motorbike often lead to injury or death because the motorcycle operator cannot avoid colliding with the vehicle. A Louisiana resident lost his life this week when this scenario played out for real on the streets of Marrero.

The crash occurred on Jan. 31 and resulted in the death of a 28-year-old male resident of Marrero. The driver of an Infinity FX45 turned into the path of the man who was driving a Honda motorcycle, causing him to collide into the passenger side of the vehicle. The man was ejected from the motorcycle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The female driver of the car, also a 28-year-old resident of Marrero, apparently did not see the oncoming motorcycle. Driver distraction is believed to have played a role in the crash, according to the police. The woman was booked into the Jefferson Parish jail and charged with negligent homicide, failure to yield and having no license plate. Driver impairment was not suspected to be a cause of the crash.

Motorcyclist safety is reliant upon safe vehicle operation by the motorcyclists themselves along with those with whom they share the road. Nothing exposes the vulnerability of a motorcyclist more than left turn accidents. The family of the Louisiana motorcyclist killed in this incident now face the emotional struggles of losing a loved one in a wreck that appears to have been preventable. In addition, they may have to deal with the unavoidable and oftentimes overwhelming financial consequences of the resulting medical and funeral expenses. An attorney can help the family recover these monetary losses by providing the best possible representation of the facts in the case, helping to prove liability on part of the driver and obtain a favorable outcome to help offset those financial losses.
