New insight into why truck accidents happen

As Louisiana readers know, truck accidents often result in serious damage and potentially catastrophic injuries. The heavy weight and large size of semitrailers mean that people in small vehicles are at a significantly higher risk of sustaining injuries in the event of a crash. Reducing the number of truck accidents has been a long-standing goal of people both inside the trucking industry and out.

New data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has provided insight into these types of collisions. In 2017, the overall number of truck accidents in the United States was the highest it has been in almost 30 years. Some believe this could be due to the fact that truckers are often racing against the clock to deliver loads on time.

A complex problem with no easy solution

There are various federal regulations in place that determine how long a driver can be behind the wheel of a semitrailer before taking a break. At this time, a driver must have a time to rest after driving for a maximum of eight hours. There are some who believe that truckers are trying to cover as much distance as they can in an eight-hour window. This may be causing them to drive at higher speeds and with more recklessness.

The issue of truck accidents is a complex problem, and despite regulations and safety measures, they are still a major concern on every road and highway in the country. There is no easy solution, but it may help to consider the following facts:

  • In 2017, there was a nine percent increase in the number of fatal truck collisions, which amounts to 392 more deaths than the year before.
  • Truckers may feel compelled to speed more because of the limitations placed on them by federal regulations.
  • There are some who even say that the mandated 30-minute rest period may even be contributing to the problem instead of actually helping.

There are dozens of statistics and facts that you may look at while trying to understand the problem of truck accidents, but one thing is certain – truck accidents are a serious threat to the safety and well-being of all drivers.

If you suffered injuries in an accident caused by a reckless or negligent trucker, you could be entitled to seek damages through a personal injury claim. An investigation into your accident can reveal what happened and allow you to seek appropriate damages for your pain and suffering.
