Car accidents: 2 dead following drag racing crash

On Behalf of | Jan 30, 2020 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Two people are dead following a drag racing incident in Baton Rouge, according to local sources. Louisiana authorities have confirmed the death of a 56-year-old driver and a 24-year-old cyclist in the accident. The other driver involved in the crash is facing serious charges, including two counts of vehicular homicide. In fatal car accidents, it is also possible for the families of the victims to file wrongful death suits separately from the criminal charges.

According to the report, the 56-year-old man was engaged in a drag race with his 57-year-old brother who was driving another vehicle. It appears the younger driver crashed into his brother’s vehicle on the side, causing both cars to veer off the road before striking a utility pole. A 24-year-old cyclist was also struck before the cars came to a rest.

The 56-year-old and the 24-year-old were pronounced dead at the scene. The 57-year-old’s condition was not included in the report, but police have charged him with multiple crimes in connection with the accident. He was remanded to the custody of East Baton Rouge Parish Prison, where he is awaiting a trial date. It is unknown if he has retained criminal counsel.

If the man is found guilty of the crimes he is accused of committing, he will likely face jail time as well as the loss of his license. Fatal car accidents are also the purview of Louisiana civil courts, where victims and their families can sue for personal injury and wrongful death as relevant. They are free to use any evidence collected by police for the criminal trial to support their case in civil court.
