Wrongful death suits possible in 4-car crash

On Behalf of | Jan 22, 2020 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Two people are dead and two others are seriously injured following a four-car pileup in Slidell, according to local sources. Spokespeople for the Louisiana State Police confirmed the deaths of one woman and one man. Police have arrested the driver believed to be responsible for the crash, meaning that individual could face criminal conviction. He could also be the subject of a wrongful death suit or suits if the families of the deceased so choose.

According to the report, a 35-year-old man driving an SUV came to a stop in the left lane of Interstate 12 near U.S. 11. Police believe the man may have been impaired, becoming unresponsive and bringing his car to a halt. This in turn caused a four-car crash that killed a 77-year-old woman and a 55-year-old man, both of whom were in the first vehicle to strike the stopped SUV.

Two other individuals in a sports car also became involved in the crash and were injured. The extent of their injuries was not released to the public, nor was the identity of either party. The individual in the fourth involved vehicle appeared unharmed.

The 35-year-old man now faces charges including two counts of vehicular injury, two of vehicular homicide, as well as other alleged traffic-related violations. He also faces a charge for possession of a controlled substance, and police are also waiting for the results of a blood test. If he is found guilty in criminal court, he could face jail time. Separately, the families of the deceased can file wrongful death lawsuits against him, and the injured parties can file personal injury suits, in Louisiana civil court.
