Car accidents: 2 dead in Louisiana

On Behalf of | Feb 20, 2020 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Two people are dead and two more have been taken to the hospital in serious condition following a four-car pileup on Interstate 12 near New Orleans, according to local sources. Representatives of the Louisiana State Police confirmed the deaths of a woman and a man who have since been identified. The driver believed responsible is facing multiple charges, as is common in cases of fatal car accidents with a clear cause.

According to police, a 35-year-old man was driving his pickup truck on I-12 when the crash occurred. Police say the man became “unresponsive” before stopping his vehicle in the left lane. This, police say, directly contributed to the accident, a subsequent four-car pileup. A 77-year-old woman and her 55-year-old male passenger were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other people in separate vehicles were also seriously hurt, but their conditions were not immediately known as of this report. The driver believed to have caused the accident did not appear to suffer any injuries in the crash. However, he now faces two counts of vehicular homicide and a further two of vehicular injury, as well as several other charges, including possession of a controlled substance.

If the man is found guilty of these charges, he could face jail time and fines, as well as the loss of his license. Separately, the families of the deceased and the injured parties are entitled under Louisiana law in cases of fatal car accidents to file wrongful death and/or personal injury suits against the responsible driver. In this case, if the driver is found to have been intoxicated, such evidence can be used to support the civil suit.
