How to safely share the road with motorcycles

On Behalf of | Apr 17, 2020 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Keeping motorcyclists safe of the roadways should be a priority for drivers. It is helpful for drivers to know how to do that and also helpful for victims of motorcycle accidents to be familiar with the protections available if they have been harmed by a negligent or careless driver who failed to account for their safety.

Motorcycle accidents can be catastrophic for victims. Motorcycle riders can be particularly vulnerable on the roadways to the careless actions of other drivers. To help keep them safe, drivers of passenger vehicles and other types of vehicles should increase their following distance to allow motorcycles greater time to react to abrupt changes in road, weather or traffic conditions that they may need. In addition, drivers should ensure motorcycles have the space they need to maneuver and should not attempt to share lanes with them.

When a motorcycle accident occurs, failure to yield the right of way to a motorcycle is the most common driver error to blame. As a result, drivers should ensure they remain alert and attentive and on the look-out for motorcycles which may be more difficult to see and spot than other types of vehicles. Drivers should continually scan the roadway for motorcycles, especially when making left turns and entering traffic. By following these simple safety tips, drivers can help keep motorcyclists safe.

When a driver has not exercised due care for the safety of motorcyclists, motorcycle accident victims may be able to recover compensation for their injuries and harm suffered through a personal injury claim for damages. A claim for damages can hold the negligent driver accountable and may be able to offer the victim the help they need with the physical, financial and emotional damages.
