A recent car crash in Louisiana has sadly claimed a person’s life. The motor vehicle collision tool place along Highway 182. The man who is believed to have caused the fatal crash due to drinking driving has since been arrested in connection with the accident.

Events leading up to the accident

The tragic collision took place shortly before 7:50 p.m. on a recent Tuesday. According to police, a 40-year-old man was driving a pickup truck on the highway and suddenly left the road. He then reportedly struck a utility post and multiple parked cars located in a nearby private parking lot.

Both the truck driver and his passenger suffered injuries in the crash and were taken to a medical center. However, the passenger died due to the injuries he or she sustained in the crash. Because police suspected that the driver was inebriated at the time of the collision, they collected a sample of blood from the driver for toxicology purposes. The man was then arrested and charged with reckless motor vehicle operation, driving under the influence and vehicular homicide.

How an attorney can help victims of drunk driving accidents

The surviving loved ones of the passenger who died in the unfortunate accident may choose to file a wrongful death claim against the driver, seeking damages. If the driver ends up being convicted on his charges, proof of the conviction may be presented in a related Louisiana civil court proceeding in an effort to establish liability for the wreck. If the plaintiff is successful, this may result in a damage award to cover the passenger’s hospital expenses and burial costs resulting from the collision.
